Edwin Rios got on base four times and drove in three runs for Louisville, Chase Petty threw seven strong innings for Chattanooga, John Michael Faile hit a long home run for Dayton, and Daytona got a shutout from David Lorduy, Dualvert Gutierrez, and Luke Hayden.

If that’s something that sounds interesting you can get more information here.

The Louisville Bats lost 4-3. Box Score

  • Brandon Williamson (rehab) threw 2.2 shutout innings with a walk and 4 strikeouts.
  • Levi Jordan went 2-5 with a run.
  • Blake Dunn went 1-5 with a run.
  • Davis Wendzel went 2-4 with a run.
  • Edwin Rios went 2-3 with 2 walks, a double, and 3 RBI.
  • Tony Kemp went 2-4 with a double and a steal (7).
  • Joey Wiemer went 1-4 with a triple.
  • Brooks Crawford threw 2.1 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts.
  • Alan Busenitz threw 2.0 shutout innings.

Game Notes

Brandon Williamson looked good at times in his 2.2 innings, giving up just one hit and no runs. He got four swings and four misses on his change up. The one issue on the night was his battle with throwing strikes. He walked one batter, but he only threw 26 strikes out of 50 pitches.

The Chattanooga Lookouts lost 3-2. Box Score

  • Tyler Callihan went 1-3 with a walk and an RBI.
  • Mat Nelson went 0-1 with 2 walks and he was hit by a pitch.
  • Quincy McAfee went 1-4.
  • Ruben Ibarra went 1-4 with a double and a run.
  • Chase Petty allowed 2 runs in 7.0 innings with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
  • Owen Holt threw 2.0 shutout innings with 2 strikeouts.
  • Luis Mey was charged with an unearned run in an inning with 2 walks and a strikeout.

The Dayton Dragons lost 11-2. Box Score

  • Ethan O’Donnell went 2-4.
  • John Michael Faile went 2-4 with a home run (7).
  • Jacob Hurtubise (MiLB rehab) went 1-2 with a double and a run.
  • Victor Acosta went 1-3 with an RBI.

The Daytona Tortugas won 2-0. Box Score

  • Sammy Stafura went 1-4 with a walk and a run.
  • Peyton Stovall went 1-3 with a walk and an RBI.
  • Ariel Almonte went 1-4.
  • Ricardo Cabrera went 1-3 with a double, HBP, and a run.
  • Esmith Pineda went 2-3 with 2 doubles and a walk.
  • Diego Omana went 2-4.
  • David Lorduy threw 3.0 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts.
  • Dualvert Gutierrez (pictured above) threw 4.0 shutout innings with a walk and 3 strikeouts.
  • Luke Hayden threw 2.0 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts.

Game Notes

The win moved Daytona to 29-23 in the second half. That has them 4.5 games up on Jupiter for a playoff birth with 12 games left.

Esmith Pineda had been on fire for the first three weeks of August, but he had gone 0-15 over the final four games he played in last week. He busted out of that slump with two doubles and a walk on Tuesday night to begin the series against Palm Beach.

David Lorduy has pitched in four games since joining Daytona in the second week of August and in all four outings he’s thrown 3.0 innings without allowing an earned run. He’s given up just four hits, walked just one batter, and now has 14 strikeouts for the Tortugas. This comes after he posted a 2.76 ERA in 42.1 innings this season for the ACL Reds.

Over his last four outings, Dualvert Gutierrez has allowed two runs while throwing 18.0 innings. His ERA is now down to 3.35 in 45.2 innings with Daytona.

Top Pitch Velocity: Luke Hayden – 96.5 MPH (strike)

Top Exit Velocity:Ariel Almonte – 107.0 MPH (single)

  • Bryce Hubbart to Chattanooga (Dayton)
  • Graham Osman to Dayton (Daytona)
  • Kyle Henley to Daytona (ACL Reds)

@Doug: Do you think Petty will be given a September call-up if he is still under his pitch limit for the season and the Reds are throwing zombies out there instead of MLB pitchers?

Petty isn’t on the 40 man roster, so probably not. Not sure why people are so anxious to burn service time on a lost season.

        Agree, Duke.

Do people want Petty, Lowder, et al for two or three starts at the end of a lost season, or for all of 2031, or whatever their last season under control would be, when the team could actually be competitive?

Because a lot of people do not care about some imaginary, unknown season in seven years. They’ve waited 30 years to see the team advanced past the 1st round of the playoffs.

But no, I doubt Petty gets the call. Lowder on the other hand? They might not have a choice. They are literally running out of guys who can throw 4 innings.

@Duke you’re right. I want the Reds to make the playoffs as much as anyone on here, but the Reds made the decision at the trade deadline to not improve their odds of making it this year.

IDC about a season 7 years from now either, but I also don’t think it’s the best plan for Petty’s success. I also don’t think it’s in Lowder’s best interest to start MLB games this year.

And bringing them up this year won’t make them advance past the first round of the playoffs either.

No, it won’t. But “what about 2031” isn’t a reason that people who aren’t eternally online care about for not calling them up. 95% of sports fans don’t care about something that might happen with their team 7 years down the line.

My first in person baseball game was Johnny Bench day right before he retired. 7 years isn’t that long. I still vividly remember the wire to wire 1990 season which was right in my 9 year old wheelhouse.

7 years is an eternity. Especially after 19 failed rebuilds for the franchise with the longest “advancement in the playoffs” drought in US sports. I’m not sure I’m even going to be alive in 7 years.

Except there is no real tangible benefit of bringing up Lowder after 1 AAA start except “getting his feet wet”. Even if the best case scenario happens and Lowder comes up and looks fantastic, the Reds still likely miss the playoffs by 7+ games. Considering the issues he had jumping from High A to AA, maybe more than 1 start in AAA could be a good idea.

Actually there is a tangible reason to call up Lowder today. He’s the best available starting pitcher in the organization for the open spot.

Kyle Henley moving up to Daytona is certainly interesting. I doubt we get to see Bernard Moon as well with Stovall in Daytona currently.

Nice outing from Hayden, he was the LSU transfer that we drafted and got signed. I wonder if he starts next year or not, depending on how injuries go, starting spots could be scarce and this was Hayden’s first year as a starter at Indiana State. Wish we could see some other 2024 draft pitchers as well. Holman only threw just over 91 IP.

Lorduy only 10 BB vs 55 K in 54.1 IP this year, just 20 years old. He’ll be one to keep an eye on next year that I think we’ll see in Daytona’s rotation.

I’m glad to see Williamson throwing in real games! It’s a good sign for next year at the very least.

Anyone care to predict where Mey will start the 2025 season? I believe he needs to be protected from the Rule 5 draft next year. They promoted Lowder, and now Acuna, leaving Mey as likely the lone man on 40 man roster in AA to start the year.

If we call up Lowder now, he would at least be eligible for a Prospect Promotion Incentive draft pick. Petty possibly as well if he ends up on top 100 prospect lists next year.

Also to my surprise, if Hunter Greene finishes in the top 3 of Cy Young voting this year we would get an extra draft pick due to him being on the Opening day roster 2 years ago.

I agree with Doug in regards to Lowder. They may be forced to bring him up this because of the pitching situation for the Reds. And I know it isn’t the same but he did throw 130 innings inn He in college. Even if he doesn’t start you can use him for 3 or 4 innings. I also am not worried about 7 years from now. You will have an entirely different team by then. My timeline is through 2026 only – what can the Reds do in the meantime to get to at least 90 wins over the next two years.

And if bringing him up now would help them get to 90 wins, i’d be all for it, but it won’t. He’s had all of 1 AAA start. He ran into issues jumping from High A to AA, it might be advisable to give him more starts in AAA and see how teams are when they see him more than once and force him to adjust to that. How does rushing one of your top prospects help the Reds win long term? Does it matter if they are potentially 78-84 vs being 75-87 this year?

“I also don’t think it’s in Lowder’s best interest to start MLB games this year.”

Let’s not pin our playoff hopes on Lowder and Petty’s backs. Krall made his bed with his offseason, and trade deadline approach. This club isn’t making the playoffs.

    Several things.

    1. Petty is not ready yet. I think it would do more harm than good to bring him to Cincinnati. He is not even dominating in AA yet. His K/9 is only average. His GB% is way down from the 58% of last year (about 45% this year). I would even start him in AA next year and hope he has a breakout similar to Abbott in 2021.

    2. Seven years is not an eternity. It is seven years and I agree with Duke that a couple of starts in 2024 is not worth the 2031 season.

    3. Bringing up Lowder or Petty now would force the Reds to create room on the 40 man roster. The number of prospects to possibly add this winter are minimal but it does limit their flexibility this winter.

    4. I have no idea what the Reds plans are for next April but a couple of starts in September in no way takes away of year of control for Cincinnati. If Lowder starts 2025 in the rotation that year of control is lost already and a couple of starts in the ML in September would enhance his chances of rookie of the year. If he doesn’t start the year in Cincinnati, every day spent on the roster in September means he has to spend that time in Louisville next April (and possibly May). I would love to see the Reds bring him up in September and see what they have. If he shows he is not ready leave him in Louisville in 2025 until June. If he does well and then impresses people in AZ next March then bring him to Cincinnati. I would love to see the Reds use leverage to sign players prior to bringing them up. I would love to see them sign Lowder to a 5 year contract with 3 team options.

Youth is wasted on the young.

But yeah – I know for a fact that when I was 25 and life had a different outlook, I was far more willing to be patient on things. Now I’m older, beaten down, not nearly as healthy, and have watched people I know and loved move on to whatever it is that’s next. Seven years is forever.

Think of it this way MK. How much value does Lowder coming up this year? Does it change your life at all. Bringing him up will not make a difference in the playoff race. The Reds are toast. The question is if (and only if) you are burning a year down the road by bringing him up now then don’t do it.

      • Cincinnati Reds Minor League Game Review: August 27, 2024 - redsminorleagues.com (26)

        Stock

One other thing. I am in favor of bringing him up now. They brought up Marte last September and did not burn a year of control. Bringing Lowder up now does not burn a year of control. Bringing him up now will however allow him to get his feet wet. It will allow the Reds to see if he is ready for show on opening day 2025.

If ML hitters find things he can’t find in AAA that is great. Now he can spend 6 – 8 weeks in 2025 in Louisville working on these things. When they call him up at the end of May (or later if he is not ready). You still have control over him through 2031. By bringing him up the Reds and Lowder learned and benefited. This helps both the player and the team looking forward. (Example includes Junior Caminero)

If he is deemed ready he has a chance to earn the team additional draft picks in 2026 and beyond. His time with the Reds next month benefit him and the Reds in this scenario too. (Examples include Gunnar Henderson and Corbin Carroll).

Because of this I see no downside in bringing him up now. Five years ago this thinking did not exist.

      • Cincinnati Reds Minor League Game Review: August 27, 2024 - redsminorleagues.com (27)

        DaveCT

I believe the criteria for promoting Lowder (and others in his situation) should be 1) In an emergency and 2) if it’s in his best interest (and thus the Reds) developmentally.

So, 1) it’s pretty much an emergency, including at AAA, by the way. Over-taxing arms can be a health risk. So, ‘Winning’ at this point is losing relevance compared to not injuring pitchers. Arms are needed. And, we are not the Dodgers, with Buehler, Flaherty, Glasnow, Kershaw, Yamamoto, etc to rotate in and out of the rotation.

        2. Is it best for Lowder to be promoted vs., say, Richardson, who could give innings at a minimum. It depends. As has been pointed out, one start at AAA won’t inform us of that. His previous 5-6 starts in AA/AAA might however. But we aren’t privy to anything but box scores. So, the pitching development staff will have to make a risk assessment. As for a cup of coffee/getting feet wet promotion, see above, is he ready.

        3. What i don’t want is some publicity stunt by the Reds, and i know no one here is suggesting that. But they arecapable, given the feel good Jim Day stories such as Hurtubise (West Point) and Dunn (with his brother in Colorado). Neither were close to ready. Given the emergency, this is irrelevant. But still.

      • Cincinnati Reds Minor League Game Review: August 27, 2024 - redsminorleagues.com (28)

        Doug Gray

3: Neither of those were publicity stunts. They were “we need someone to come up and play and these guys are on the 40-man roster”. Hurtubise his like seven thousand last year and when he was called up was just being activated from the injured list and had played a handful of games on the season. Dunn was the reigning Reds MiLB player of the year. He had been struggling some, but he’s also not a DH. He can run and he can play defense. Those things have value even if he wasn’t hitting, and they didn’t call him up to be a starting player.

      • Cincinnati Reds Minor League Game Review: August 27, 2024 - redsminorleagues.com (29)

I respectfully disagree. Whether ML ready or not, both coming off injury and/or scuffling at AAA lead to both being over-powered. They should not have been put in that position. But, no blood, no foul, i guess.

And i just have an ax to grind with the Reds’ use of their media as cheerleaders vs. calling the game and reporting on the clubhouse. Separate issue, i understand. My bias spilled.

    • Cincinnati Reds Minor League Game Review: August 27, 2024 - redsminorleagues.com (30)

      DaveCT

Stock, i may disagree with your take on whether Petty is ready for or will receive a promotion (and, by promotion, i mean to AAA).

In two of his last three starts, Petty has thrown 7 innings, totaling 93 and 94 pitches. After his first 7 inning stint, he got hit around, and i wondered if that were due to fatigue. I suspect that may have been at least part of it. I think we’ll know more about Petty’s suitability for promotion in the next start or two. If he gets to 7 innings and/or 90-plus pitches, i believe we’ll see him in line for promotion.

Part of this is by observation of the club’s other promotions. With other pitchers, when the have demonstrated the ability to go deeper into games, they’ve been bumped up. Most recently, Lowder from A to AA. Previously, Abbott from AA to AAA and AAA to the ML’s. So it seems to be the club’s practice.

Secondly, given Petty’s restrictions last year, the fact that the club is turning him loose is highly encouraging. This includes letting him increase his velocity from 2023 to 2024, too. Part of that is the indication of not just a one-year plan for him but quite possibly a two to three year plan advancing him to the majors.

So, in player development, i tend not to look at season long numbers as compared to when the player is showing the type of growth the club wants. And it really seems both effectiveness (duration if start) and efficiency (pitch efficiency) are important measures.

      Either way, we shall see.

        Dave,

I think Abbott received his promotions in 2021 because he was absolutely dominate. Was he going deep into games? Yes but wasn’t that a by product of his dominance. Likewise, Lowder’s last 5 starts in Chattanooga were dominate. 0.69 ERA but less than 6 IP per start. In 5 starts this month Petty has a 4.73 ERA. If you go back two more starts it is better at 3.58. I just see no value in having him in Cincinnati in 2024. Treat him like they did with Abbott. Remember that Abbott was 24 years old last year when he went through 3 levels. Petty is currently 21. Remember Petty is younger than Chase Burns.

Promoting Petty to the ML’s would be negligence. To clarify, I am mostly looking at things this way: Are we seeing Petty beginning to break out? We could be. I am also stating that should we see him break out, he is in line for a promotion to AAA, best next year (and possibly this, should the emergency at the ML level create a similar crisis in Louisville).

I think i am one of the least likely of the ‘promote them!” crowd.

Petty has 2 starts left in AA if all things go normally and should end up with around 125 IP on the year. Last year he had 68 IP, but 98 the season before. It might be a stretch even if he had thrown 98 last year to ask him to pitch more than these next 2 MILB outings.

I’m in the “7 years is an eternity” camp. I’m also in the camp that sees MLB trending toward eliminating the “years of control” service time formulae. There may still be 40-man and 26-man roster issues involved, but the game is getting very close to a “play the best players” status. I expect there will always be issues wanting to get value from the big-$$ contract signings, but with the newer incentive promotions and draft pick rewards, there’s little reason left to otherwise stunt the timing of someone ready to play.

As far as the current predicament – Lowder is probably best suited for a call up soon, but Petty does seem to need more polishing/better results in MiLB.

I think it’s the wrong move, but no use crying about it. If he goes out and looks good these next 5 starts, pencil him in the rotation for next year and go for that rookie of the year.

Honestly, I wouldn’t hate it if we just rolled young next year. Time for Greene, Lodolo, and Abbott to be the vets.

      Greene
      Lodolo
      Lowder
      Abbott
      Aguiar

Gives us two lefties and three righties. Move Ashcraft to the bullpen, have Williamson and Phillips starting in AAA for depth along with a MiLB FA starting pitcher then probably Abel and Farr to round out the Louisville rotation. Move Lyon Richardson to the swing starter/long relief role in Louisville and be the backup for Spiers who can have that roll on the big club. Sign one big bat for the middle of the order, I don’t care if it’s any one of the 4 corner spots, and a legit bullpen arm to supplement what we have. Try to trade Jeimer for anyone who will take that contract, extend Tyler Stephenson, and see if Elly is open to one of those 8-9 year deals.

Just dropping my 2 cents on this discussion. I used to be all for manipulating service time. Now I think it does more harm than good. It creates an adversarial vibe that doesn’t help in negotiations in the long run. Better to sign players to extensions early. That said, pitcher injuries are so common now that I think the right approach is to use them as soon as they’re ready, and get what you can get out of them while you can get it.

  13. Cincinnati Reds Minor League Game Review: August 27, 2024 - redsminorleagues.com (44)

    Acepurple

Honestly, I think adding some seasoned pitchers through FA is what the Reds will do rather than just assume that these young guys are all bound for long-term rotation roles.
Aguiar is a good solid pitcher in the Leake mold. Lowder is a special talent but he’s not Skenes. Petty — I would guess him to become more of a closer than a starter even if he’s profiling into a rotation now.
There are some pretty good “average” pitchers in the system who might be appealing for the Reds as they re-do their bullpen for 2025.
At the moment, Santillan looks like the guy who could thrive as a closer since Diaz is missing a bolt at present.
Acuna intrigues me, as does Lorant in low A.
Chase Burns is on the docket as well, and we know nothing of Holman or the recently forgotten Tim “Pink” Floyd.
In any case, a lot of pitchers in this organization will be given a chance to audition for big-league jobs, even if we currently think some of those spots are cemented.
Ashcraft is a key piece, and if we squint, Richardson and Phillips may emerge.
